Savior, Advent Sermon, Luke 2:11

“Savior,” Luke 2:11
Introduction Speaking of course of Jesus, the authors of “The Incarnation in the Gospels,” wrote, “The humility of his birth became the whole pattern of his life… the sufferings that commenced with his incarnation culminated with his crucifixion.”[1]
Transition Our Savior came to shepherds and He came to shepherd us! That doesn’t sound like a big deal because we’re so used to the Shepherd motif in the New Testament. It’s embedded into our understanding of Jesus and the Christian life.
·“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.” (John 10:14) ·“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36)
These and similar passages speak of shepherds and shepherd in a positive light, connecting the shepherding motif to Jesus. This is, of course, a good thing but here’s what you need to see in order to see the deepest beauty of Luke 2:11.

“Emmanuel,” Matthew 1:23
Introduction Gaius Glenn Atkins, then Minister at First Congregational Church in Detroit, during his Sunday morning address on December 26th, 1909 said, “The ground of religion is in the changeless love of God.”[1]And what is true religion? James 1:27 (NLT).
“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”
Pure religion is rooted in the love of God and it is active. Here’s the heart of what II hope you’ll see today. Pure religion, defined by the love of God, is incarnational.
